Being the epicenter of First War of Independence Lucknow is a city having historical significance. Also, once you are in Lucknow you cannot resist yourself from the delicious cuisines it offers. Lucknow marks its presence on the global map for the taglines received such as city of ‘Nawabs & Kebabs’, ‘Tehzeebon Ka Sheher’ and many more.
But the city is beyond culture and cuisine and is a ‘Science & Tech Hub’. Yes! The city comprises numerous institutes and centres which have scientific orientation and are of national and international importance. Some of them you wouldn’t be aware of, so here they are:
1. Regional Science City Lucknow
One of the premier scientific institutes in Lucknow, Science City comes out to be a museum cum educational institute which is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture. Well “आंचलिक विज्ञान नगरी” is a popular name for it. A lot of rush can be seen during the school vacations as the sole purpose of the institute is to make children and kids understand concepts of science.
2. Indira Gandhi Planetarium
It came into existence since May 2003 and is an unmatched building because of its Saturn shape structure. The very first look of the planetarium is enchanting as it is surrounded by water pool with fountains. It is a place completely dedicated to depiction of astronomy, and outer space.
3. Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI)
The Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) is a multidisciplinary research laboratory in Lucknow, India, employing scientific personnel from various areas of biomedical sciences. It is one of the first laboratories to be established in India right after its independence. CDRI is among the thirty nine laboratories that are functioning under the aegis of the council of scientific and Industrial Research CSIR of India. CDRI was formally inaugurated on 17 Feb 1951 by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru.
4. National Botanical Research Institute
Primarily established as the National Botanical Gardens by the U.P government this institute came under central government in the year 1953. It is the “Mecca” of students and research scholars engaged in study of applied botanical science. Last year this institute brought laurels to the city by winning the prestigious CSIR Technology award for making a diabetes curing drug.
5. Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Science
Located on a roughly 550 acres of residential land SGPGI is one of the largest institutes of medical sciences in the city serving both medical hospitality and research work. Because of its super-speciality teaching, training and research work it is rated amongst the top medical institutes in the country.
6. Biotechnology Park
Designated as the only functional Biotechnology Park in North India, this scientific institute caters the need of biotic industries all over the state. It is because of this institute that Lucknow was declared a “Biotech City” during the 89th Indian Science Congress held at University of Lucknow.
7. IT City
Conceptualized under the former SP government in collaboration with HCL, IT city is a one stop destination for tech savvy enthusiasts of the state. Having about ₹1500 crores as budget and spread over 100 acres of land IT city has been operational since September 2016 and has trained hundreds of aspiring techies.
